Words From The Warden
Love Like Jesus
This week, I found it especially difficult to settle on something meaningful to share.
Many of you have likely noticed the beautiful new sign at the front of the church. It was generously donated to our parish by the contractor, Mitch, and master carpenter, Phil, and I am certain Bill Wilken also helped bring it to life. What makes the sign especially meaningful is not only its beauty, but also the care and craftsmanship behind it—a small yet beautiful expression of the love within our parish.
Last Saturday, I returned to reinstall a small cabinet for Dorinda, a lovely client. Our team had previously painted her bathroom and cabinets, but this final task had not yet been completed. Finishing the job gave me the chance to get to know Dorinda better, hear what she appreciated about Five Star Painting, and learn more about the things that bring her joy.
Dorinda was raised Catholic and continues to value that tradition. At one point in our conversation, she said, “I am Catholic, but I am not a good one.”
She explained that her sister often criticizes her for missing Mass or not receiving Communion. Dorinda also shared that her granddaughter is being raised in the Eastern Orthodox tradition, which deeply troubles her sister. In her sister’s view, being raised in a different faith tradition means the child will not go to heaven.
I have carried this conversation with me all week, and it breaks my heart that anyone would be judged as unworthy simply because they do not belong to a particular faith tradition.
Our calling—yours and mine—is to be disciples of Jesus. We are called to love one another regardless of denomination, skin color, or nationality. Jesus taught that when we feed the hungry, we feed him; when we shelter the homeless, we care for him; and when we clothe those in need, we serve him.
Shame on us if we set aside Christ’s commandment to love and focus instead on being a “good” Episcopalian, Methodist, or Catholic. Let us rise above that and love as Christ expects us to love.
Peace,
Henry Zaborniak, Senior Warden
