Get To Know Bishop Gibbs...
Wendell N. Gibbs, Jr. was born March 21,1954 and lived in Washington, D.C. as a child. Before college, he became a postulant in the Roman Catholic Order of the Holy Trinity, living and taking classes for three years at a Maryland monastery. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Towson University, Maryland, and worked several years in various businesses. Gibbs joined the Episcopal Church during this period, and in 1984 enrolled in Seabury-Western Seminary, Evanston, Illinois, where he graduated in 1987. After serving at Emmanuel Church, Rockford, Ill. (1987-1989) and in several other positions, Gibbs became rector of St. Andrew’s, Cincinnati in 1993, where he served until he was elected bishop coadjutor of the Diocese of Michigan on Oct. 2, 1999.
Gibbs was consecrated bishop on Feb. 5, 2000, and became the Tenth Bishop of Michigan on the retirement of Bishop Wood in November of that year. Gibbs and his wife, Karlah live in Columbus, Ohio. He has two stepchildren and two grandchildren.
