FOR THE SPIRIT: submitted by parishioner Dr. Jimi James
Dr. Amy Acton has become a household name during this pandemic. Her almost daily appearance on Gov. DeWine’s report on the state of the Covid-19 in Ohio brings knowledge of the disease and explanations for decisions being made to keep Ohioans Covid safe. She is Jewish and shared on Passover that she had picked up and re-read Victor Frankl’s book Man’s Search for Meaning. I can remember reading this book after WWII; it had an emotional and spiritual impact that is still alive today. I picked it up again this week. Written in 1945 in 9 days it wasn’t a recounting of survival in concentration camps. It was centered on Nietzsche’s words “He who has a WHY to live for can bear almost any HOW.” And Frankl’s why’s were meaningful- work, love of another person, and courage in difficult times.

I am finding the re-reading a meaningful spiritual experience. When the hectic pace of life slows, a less pragmatic set of questions float through one’s mind. Frankl’s book offers some seldom used windows.
