MULTI-GENERATIONAL CHORAL PROGRAMS IN THE ANGLICAN TRADITION

MUSIC AT ST LUKE'S

St. Luke’s offers a vibrant multi-generational choral music program in the Anglican tradition. The primary ministry of the choirs, and of all choirs in the Episcopal Church, lies in their role as leader, supporter and teacher of the congregation in the singing of the hymns and service music. Additionally, the choirs serve as model and teacher for the congregation in liturgy and worship.

The choirs also offer choral voluntaries, the repertoire being drawn from all musical periods. Anthems from England and America form the core, and music of other nationalities and times are included for balance.

CHORISTERS CHOIR

This children’s choir, following in the centuries-old Anglican choral tradition, is open to boys and girls in grades 2 through 12 who have an interest and can make the commitment of time. If you know a child who likes to sing, the Choristers Choir may be a good fit!

Music education forms the core of this choir – instead of teaching music by rote, we teach children how to read music. This is a skill that will last a lifetime, and we take that seriously! However, we also have fun – regular choir outings to mini-golf, ice skating and laser tag. If the interest and commitment is high enough, big trips can be planned (such as the England Trip in 2012).

Rehearsal Schedule
Saturdays, 2:00 – 3:00 pm (Choristers Choir)

NOTE: The Choristers are a long-term commitment, and sing most Sunday mornings. If you have any interest, please speak to any choir member, call the church office at (740) 587-0167 or email R. Scott Rieder, choristers@stlukesgranville.org.

ST. LUKE’S CHOIR

This mixed adult choir is comprised of members of the Parish and other interested singers. The choir sings a variety of sacred choral music and greatly values the opportunity to serve the Lord through music.

St. Luke’s Choir is formed primarily of volunteer singers who rehearse and sing weekly usually at one of the Sunday morning services. Assisted by college students, called “Choral Scholars”, the choir sings a repertoire of varying difficulty weekly – so the ability to read music is helpful. Rehearsals are 7:30 – 9:00 pm, Thursdays, September through May.

FESTIVAL CHOIR

Individuals who enjoy singing, but cannot make a long-term commitment, are invited to sing in the Festival Choir. Joining St. Luke’s other choirs, the Festival Choir usually sings Evensong in the fall and a Requiem on Good Friday in the spring.

We’ll begin rehearsals on Thursday, September 11, 7:30 – 8:30, preparing the Vaughan Williams Five Mystical Songs. The Festival Choir is formed from the other choirs, and includes singers who are looking for this shorter commitment. The first few weeks of rehearsals are critical to learning the notes, the last few are important to polish the performance.

Rehearsals continue through September, and culminate in a performance of the work on Sunday, October 12 at 4:00 pm.

CHORAL SCHOLARS

This is an eight-member choral ensemble of students from Denison University. The Choral Scholars exists both as an independent ensemble and as section leaders in a supporting role to St. Luke’s other choirs.
